Contexts of Memory PERFORMANCE
Marie Yevkiné Tirard is a multimedia artist, experimental musician, singer, and writer. She works with sound, poetry, analog images, film, textiles, and family archives. Her work is preoccupied with memory, listening, language, distance, and transmission, and above all with the moments in which preserved material resurfaces in another person, another body, another time. In recent years, she has been exploring Armenian modal music and the ashugh and gusan traditions, drawing them into her experimental sound practice. She also creates open scores and participative situations in which the work does not necessarily end with the artist’s performance, but may continue through someone else’s listening, remembering, singing, or interpretation.
Description : Marie Yevkiné found a notebook of poems (in Western Armenian) written by her great-grand mother Yevkiné Diarian, survivor of the genocide. Embodying a contemporary version of the mystical Ashugh, she transforms these once-silent words into trembling musical scores. Inspired by the disappearing tradition of Armenian modal singing, her voice reactivates these intimate maternal memory and reflects on the importance of personal archives in collective resistance, through music, storytelling, and philosophical reflection. The immersive performance is accompanied with a video projection of the poems and ruins of the Armenian landscape. Marie’s voices mixes with experimental music, electro-acoustic Saz and ambient sounds of the Armenian landscape.
