JAN DOMS – MUSHTOPIA
art & architecture in motion
July 12 – August 9, 2019
Opening hours Tuesday – Saturday: 11:00 – 17:00 hrs
The aspects of time and motion are central to Jan Doms’ work. Many of his constructive and dynamic sculptures play a direct role in the performances whereby visual disciplines are combined with dance and movement, light animation and with sound and (electronic) music. What makes his work special is the fact that many (large-scale) works take place at the interface of art disciplines, architecture and urban design.

In 1993 Jan Doms opened his exhibition in collaboration with JanHein van Stiphout with the performance Jo-Jo. Together with Christell Frints, they formed the artists’ collective De Maatschap Internationaal (1986-1998).
The history of the Jo-Jo dates back to 500 years before Christ and was then made from terra cotta. Now the glass Jo-Jo comes into action.
HOUSE OF CARDS
In 1990 and 1991 House of Cards was performed at the Stedelijk Museum Zutphen (NL) and the Hessenhuis Antwerpen (B), among others.
To increase the tension, Jan Doms is building in the Grand Hall in collaboration with Tiruhi Tonoyan a house of cards made of glass.
August 2 / APACHE | WONDER CIRCLE
World premiere !
APACHE
Jan Doms lived for about 20 years in a small village Gilze-Rijen near his home town Tilburg.
This village is known because of its military airport. On the occasion of the arrival of the Apache helicopters, the commander of the airbase asked Jan Doms to design a performance for the welcome of a squadron of these advanced helicopters. However, NATO objected. But now, twenty years later, this performance is finally being performed in the Grand Hall.
WONDER CIRCLE
The Wonder Circle is part of the exhibition and can be set in motion by the public. One of the visitors described her experience with the Wonder Circle as follows: Never could imagine a steel spring can dance so harmoniously !
August 9 / TALKING GLIDERS / FINISSAGE
World premiere !
TALKING GLIDERS
Talking Gliders is a performance for which the American Armenian writer – poet Alex Vartan Gubbins wrote a dialogue between two pilots who fly in an imaginary way over the abandoned Mush (ghost town) area in Gyumri and tell each other what they observe and what thoughts for the future Mush come up in them. One of the gliders, created in collaboration with Juliane Schreiber (DE) floats in the Grand Hall, waiting for the performance.
FINISSAGE
Talking Gliders is also the last performance in the SHOWTIME series that heralds the Finissage of the exhibition.
