Rite of Mourning

The performance of fourteen century old Ashura that has become an epos in its form and nature is the most important religious event in the lives of Iran’s Shiia Moslems.
For non-Moslems ta’ziyeh (lamentation for the dead) of Ashura is merely a mourning procession. However, like the epic oh “Shahnameh” , this annual event has turned into unique and phenomenal form of Persian drama and art of narration.
