Brendan McCall [back]

Brendan McCall is a movement artist based in New York City. He became aware of ACCEA/NPAK artist residency program through Zach Poff (2002 Residency Program). Zack and Brendan have been collaborating on new work together for the past couple of years.  Along with a sound artist (NB Aldrich) they created a 35 minute intermedia solo performance piece, "Kick in the Eye," which has been presented in Vermont, New York, Maine, and California since October of 2004. They traveled to the Polli Talu Arts Center in Estonia this in spring of 2005 for 2 weeks, to have concentrated time to develop new work as a cross-disciplinary team.

McCall is currently in the world-premiere of Kelly Stuart's play "The Life of Spiders," which runs through April 11th. In addition to acting, He performs aerial silk trapeze.  In addition to developing new work of his own, he will dance in a new all-male choreography by Alexandra Beller (formerly of Bill T. Jones Dance Company) in late April, and co-direct the Shri Yoga Teacher Training Program in New York.  He has taught dance, movement, and physical theater at various institutions in the past 10 years, including New York University (1996-2001), the American Academy of Dramatic Arts (2000-02), Holderness Theater Company (1998-2003), Bennington College (2002-03), and the Yale School of Drama (2002-present).  He has also been a returning Master Teacher to various dance programs in Stockholm, Sweden for the past 2 years.

In Armenia he foresaw and accomplished a rich opportunity, concentrating on developing more of his own work, as well as having possibilities to share and dialogue with local artists during the period of the residency.

BLACK BOX
By Gagik Ghazareh*

Black Box is the unknown which is forced upon us as the boundary of truth. To know beyond it means being at the center of a dead alley, where the high-rise towers of contemporary civilization collapse. Today the Black Box is the wrapping by which planet earth has been attractively wrapped and put on the market at cheap price. In the Black Box everything is done in the name of the Black Box. By making man self-centered the Black Box deprives him from collective self. It imposes sick feelings of loss of identity.  In the Black Box the self is the Black Box itself.

Work with Brendan McCall was a wonderful opportunity for not only appreciating the mind-set of the artists of the American theater, but also getting to know an American per se.

Human communication and mutual social interest are at the foundation of our theater and are basic tenets of its productions.

I can say with pleasure that Brendan McCall became “NPAK” Theater Company’s first international member. Working with him was drenched with high level of professionalism and genuine immediacy.

As a result, the English and Armenian language joint production simultaneous with outpour of human anxiety became very delicate and accessible.
