2002

The year 2002 became historical landmark in the life of NPAK. In February the space of the Center was granted to NPAK by the Government of Armenia, for permanent use. At the same time National Benefactors Jean and Albert Boghossians gave NPAK a major grant for renovation and refurbishing of the space. All exhibitions, except for Festival of Alternative Art, were put on hold pending completion of the renovations. The festival was made an exception to avoid interruption in the tradition of annual exhibitions of Alternative Art.
In May of 2002 another major success was registered by NPAK. Efforts were successful in securing a benefactor for creating a Sculpture Garden at the entrance green of the Center. A 4.25-meter high, quadruple scale bronze cast of Yervand Kochar’s “Melancholy” (1956) would be erected at the entrance. It is indeed fitting and appropriate to install a major creation by Yervand Kochar at a public space, in front of NPAK, a faithful follower of the great master and the forefather of Armenian modern art. The benefactor had chosen to remain anonymous. However, he had made the donation in the name of “Nor Ej” Literary Group, one of the exponents of the Armenian modern literature. The casting of the sculpture was completed and the sculpture was erected 2003. On 23 September 2003 the sculpture was inauguirated by the Mayor of Yerevan Mr. Yervand Zakharian. By the wishes of the benfactor his name was revealed after his passing in 2004. He was Iranian-Armenian writer, poet and architect Rouben Avanessian (pen-name "R-Ben").
May 24-June 10, "Festival of Alternative Arts: Affirmative Art" Group exhibition of fine and performing arts by 49 artists and performers, curated by David Kareyan and Vartan Azadian. Series of events took place: Exhibition of installations and paintings, evening of Rock music, evening of avant-garde music, sessions of video viewing, and a discussion-seminar of artists and art critics.
In the month of July, 14 artists of NPAK were guests of the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art for a 2-week exhibition of Armenian avant-garde art. The multi-media exhibition was held at Artists House of Tehran. It was very successful. Unexpected number of Iranian art enthusiasts visited the exhibition. Stepan Veranian curated the exhibition.
Beginning summer of 2001 NPAK started a “Residency Program” whereby artists from abroad would be provided with workspace and facilities at NPAK for a 2-3 month period. While in Armenia, besides producing individual works, visiting artists would interact with their local counterparts, through studio visits, exhibitions and presentations accompanied with discussion sessions, etc. About 25% of the visiting artists have been of non-Armenian origin. This year 4 artists visited from the United States, and one from Europe.
At the end of August NPAK participated at the 3rd Giumri Biennale of Art by a multi-media project curated by David Kareyan and Eva Khachatrian. The title of the work was “No Return”.
Upon completion of renovations in September, another new program was initiated at the Center. The program is weekly discussion and review sessions on various aspects of the arts and literature. Initially it started with screening of foreign feature films with commentary by cinema-expert Zaven Boyajian. This program was followed by weekly sessions on “Alternative Literature” led by the editors of “Bnagir” electronic periodical, Violet Grigorian, and Vahram Mardirossian. Sessions on theater, music, architecture, fine arts, etc. wereplanned to follow.
September 26-29, 2002. Series of major events in celebration of NPAK's 10th anniversary was organized and curated by NPAK's Founder and Senior Artistic Director Sonia Balassanian. The program included multi-media performance-installations, cyber-arts, photography, video art, avant-garde music, traditional paintings, installations, etc.
November 19-December 10, 2002. Group exhibition of “3 Artists”: Vahram Aghassian, Diana Hagopian and Narek Avetissian. This exhibition was the pilot project of small-group and solo exhibitions to be organized for interim periods of large-scale group exhibitions and major projects. Participating artists would be selected from the list of artists associated with NPAK.
In December, NPAK Experimental Theater Group produced a multi-media play called “In the Room”, based on Yeghishe Charents epic poem “Danteesque Myth”, written, directed and produced by Gagik Ghazareh. The play was contemporary interpretation of great poet’s reaction and reflections on the turn-of-the-century tragedy of the Armenian Genocide.
For the fifth consecutive time, the Ministry of Culture, Youth Affairs and Sports of the Republic has appointed NPAK, to organize the Pavilion of the Republic of Armenia at the 50th International Art Biennale of Venice, to be held June through November 2003. Edward Balassanian, Co-Founder of NPAK was appointed the Commissioner of the Pavilion. An open competition was announced for selection of the art to be sent to Venice. 46 artists registered to take part. By the deadline 37 artists presented their works. The exhibition opened on December 16. Joint video/performance project of David Kareyan and Eva Khachatrian, entitled “No Return” was selected to represent Armenia at the 2003 Venice Biennale.
